Las Vegas 2017

Vegas was the start to a two part vacation.  We had planned a Grand Canyon rafting trip and had to fly into Vegas, so we decided to stay there for 3 nights since Mike nor Rylie had ever been.

Once we got there, we got to taxi to our hotel, Paris and hit the sack after the very long check in line. Rylie was amazed with the hotel since she had always wanted to go to the real Paris.

The next morning we woke up early and headed to brunch at Hash House a Go Go. There was a little bit of a wait, but it didn't take long until we had a table.  The food was delicious and the portions were huge!

It was HOT, so we grabbed an Uber to take us to Mandalay Bay to visit the Shark Reef. Rylie loves sharks so she had a blast pointing out all of the different sharks. Mike had fun in the souvenir shop! lol

We then headed to NYNY so Rylie could ride the roller coaster.  Then back to the hotel so I would take a nap and Rylie and Mike headed to the pool.

That night we went to see the Blue Man Group at the Luxor.  We had no idea what to expect and we were all impressed.  We all enjoyed it! We had dinner after the show at Dick's last resort at Excalibur... we all got a good laugh!

The next morning we had breakfast at Paris before we headed to check out all of the hotels. We had lunch at The Sugar Factory in the Fashion Show Mall, then headed back to the hotel for another pool break to beat the heat.

That night we went to see the Mat Franco show at the Linq.  He was the winner of America's Got Talent as the magician.  Rylie really wanted to see him, but Mike and I were not all that excited about it.  Although, it turned out to be a great show and we left pretty impressed and scratching our heads. On the way out Rylie saw a drag queen and freaked out (what is her fascination with this?!?!?), then we went to ride the High Roller. It took about 30 minutes to make the full rotation.  At the highest elevation we were at 550 ft.  The views were awesome from the top!

The next morning we had breakfast at the restaurant in Paris, then went to pick up our rental car to make our drive to Page, AZ.  The views were beautiful.  We stopped at the "welcome to Utah" sign and again for lunch in Kanab, UT and a slight detour. I had read somewhere that Kanab also had an Old Hollywood movie set and it was just a few blocks from where we stopped for lunch, so I figured it would give us an opportunity to stretch our legs.  Mike and I thought it was pretty cool... Rylie was not impressed. :)

We finally got back in the car and our next stop was the Glen Canyon Dam in Page, AZ. Then finally our hotel for the night that had beautiful views overlooking Lake Powell and the Colorado River.  Mike and Rylie went for a swim while I rested in the room.  We had dinner that night at The Dam Bar & Grill.

We woke up early to make way towards the Antelope Canyon.  After getting somewhat lost, we finally found the tour company we had booked with.  Our tour time was 10am.  When we got there we were told that if the temperature for the day gets higher than 105, then they could not let any other tours through.  After 30 minutes or so, it felt like we were being pinned like cattle.  The few people we saw come back from their tour told us that it was well worth the heat and to stick it out.  But the temperatures kept rising and they continued to push back our tour time.  We finally gave us and requested a refund.  We left there and drove to horseshoe bend.  Again they had heat warning signs at the beginning of the hike.  It wasn't a long hike... maybe a mile or so, but it was in sand and up and down hills. When we finally got out to the bend Rylie went straight to the edge and wanted to hang her feet over, like other people were doing.  I started freaking out and told her not to... The drop was pretty impressive and the ground was not even.  I didn't want to risk it... of course she was mad for a few.  We had a "discussion" and cleared the air.  We hung out and walked around out there for about an hour.

Antelope Canyon waiting area

We got back in the car on a mission to find somewhere to eat.  With the spotty internet it looked as though the closest restaurant was 27 miles away. We wandered this and that way aimlessly until we just decided to head to our lodge for the night and figured they would have something close.  About an hour later we found the Cliff Dweller's Restaurant.  When we pulled up (only one other car in the parking lot), they had a family from Australia walking out and raved to use about their hamburgers.  So we ordered hamburgers and Mike and I had a beer.  Their were only about 5 tables total and only one other table was taken.  It was super small, but the people was friendly and the food was good.

The view from our table
After dinner we made our way to the Marble Canyon Lodge to check in and get ready for our rafting expedition. Continue reading the Grand Canyon Post.

Tennessee

Tennessee  Tracy City/Lynchburg  Every year after hanging out with our extended family over the holidays, we promise each other that we will spend more time together. Well in 2022 we made that happen. Our cousins Dawn and Brian reached out to see if we would be interested in taking a short trip to Lynchburg, TN to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery . We jumped at the chance and Dawn started looking for places for us to stay. She found us the cutest "tiny home" at The Retreat at Water's Edge .  Day 1:  We picked up Dawn and Brian at their home in Covington, LA bright and early on a Thursday morning. When we got there, Dawn had mimosas ready (my kinda woman)! We loaded up Mike's truck and started making our way to Tracy City. After hours of laughing and a couple mimosa refills for us ladies, we made a stop for lunch in Tuscaloosa, AL at Avenue Pub . The food was delicious and the beer was even better.  We finally made it to the retreat where our tiny home was. It w...

Ireland 2010

Ennis We took an overnight flight to Shannon, Ireland and landed around 9am.  Having not been able to sleep on the flight, it probably wasn't the best idea to hop in a rental and drive several hours (on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car) to the Cliffs of Moher.  Mary the driver, Julie the navigator and Holly asleep in the backseat! We should have realized we were in trouble when Mary started the rental and tried to drive away, but the car was making a streaking sound... Then a nice man walked up and told us we still had on the emergency break! :)    After taking in the views of the Cliffs we drove to the beautiful city of Ennis and checked into the Old Ground Hotel.  We later walked the streets, shopping, grabbing dinner and drinks, then stopped in a local pub where Holly insisted we each have an Irish Car bomb, since we were in Ireland after all.  Obviously, this was not Holly's first rodeo! Cuba 2017

As soon as I heard that flight from the US to Cuba were scheduled, I began thinking of an excuse to go!  Commercial flight began in Late 2016, so with our anniversary in early March, that gave me just enough time to start planning and booking.  Traveling to Cuba from the US for the sake of tourism was illegal however, the Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel.  We traveled with a People to People educational visa.  I mentioned to Mike the idea of going to Havana for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary and he was all for it.  I booked our flights from Southwest out of Fort Lauderdale and our Casa Particular and we patiently waiting for March.  Because of limited flight to and from Havana, we had to stay the night in Fort Lauderdale.  I booked the cheapest room I could find since we would only be there for 8 hours or so.  FYI, the cheapest room in Fort Lauder...
