Boston 2017

One of my best friends moved to the Boston area in late 2016.  I decided to visit her over Easter weekend 2017... I had to wait for all the snow to melt first! :)

I arrived on a Thursday evening and she pick me up at the airport after work.  We were able to catch up a bit while sitting in traffic... it had been a while since we had seen each other.  We headed straight to the flagship Wahlburgers for dinner and a couple pints. Unfortunately we did not see any of the Wahlburgs, but we chatted with the friendly bartender for a bit while he poked fun at our Louisiana accents.

We went back to Nicole's house that she shares with her boyfriend after dinner, hung out for a bit, then hit the sack.  We woke up early-ish on Good Friday for a day full of sight seeing. We took Nicole's car to the train station and had to get a bit of assistance from one of the janitors to make sure we were buying the right ticket.  We were headed to Boston Commons to meet up with a friend that Nicole and I had worked with during college.  Lindsay with with us both at Express in the Mall of Louisiana while going to LSU.  She was originally from Boston and had moved back after college.  It had been about 10 years since we had seen each other, but we caught up quickly and she served as our tour guide for the day! :) First stop in Boston Commons was "Make Way for Ducklings" and then we tried to hop on one of the swan boats, but they didn't open till the following weekend, so a quick pic would have to do.

We then headed to the original Cheers, but we were too early and they were not open for lunch yet.  So another pic of the outside

We started walking to the downtown area and luckily we had Lindsay to point out some tourist attractions.  We passed by the State House, Kings Chapel and Burying Ground, the site of the Boston Tea Party, The New England Holocaust Memorial, Boston City Hall, John F. Kennedy Federal Building, etc. By the time we got to Faneuil Hall Marketplace we stopped in to grab lunch.  It was packed!!!  But we headed to Boston Chowda for a Buttered Lobster Roll.

After a delicious Lobster Roll, we visited some shops then stopped in at the Cheers location at Faneuil Hall for a few beers and to catch up more with Lindsay.  It also happened to be Marathon weekend and Sam Adams had a limited edition beer for the occasion.  It was called 26.2 and was pretty good.

We had tickets to go to the Red Sox game that night so we started making out way toward Fenway.  We walked past the Marathon Finish Line, the memorial and then walked in the Marathon expo to check it out.

We then headed to the iconic Fenway Park.  Lindsay is a huge Red Sox fan so we were glad she was there to show us the ropes.  She took us first to Bleacher Bar.  This is a bar that is literally in center field of Fenway.  It was packed... we grabbed a couple drinks, charged our phones and headed to the park.  It was a bobble head night... Lindsay explained to use that only the first 12.000 fans got them and she WAS NOT going to miss it! :) The bobble head that night was Mookie Betts. We got our bobble heads and Lindsay gave us a tour of Fenway so we could check it out from all angles.  We found our seats and as the game went on the temperature dropped drastically.  It got cold quick.  So cold we decided to leave early.  We walked and grabbed dinner next to the field.  Lindsay then took us back to Nicole's house and we hit the sack.

The next morning we woke up and took the train back to the city.  We got off at South Station and just started walking to see what we could stumble upon.  We saw the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, and stopped for lunch at the Barking Crab.  Nicole's uncle had suggested it to her.  It was a beautiful sunny day at this quirky restaurant.  So beautiful that the restaurant was packed.  We finally found a seat near the bar and ordered our Lobster Roll (again).  While we were eating more and more people filled the restaurant and before  we knew it we had strangers standing over us as we ate

We continued walking toward the North End.  We walked past Boston Harbor, Boston Marriott Long Wark, New England Aquarium, Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park before finding The Paul Revere House, then the Old North Church.  We also stumbled upon the famous Mike's Pastry.  It was crowded, but the crowd moved fast and we were able to get our huge cannoli and get outta there.

We met up with our friend Johnathan.  He had just moved to Boston with his boyfriend.  We bar hopped and ubered around Boston for a while before Nicole's boyfriend came to meet us for dinner. We enjoyed dinner then bar hopped a bit more before calling it a night.  I had an early flight the next morning.

I woke up around 5:00 for my flight back to NOLA on Easter Sunday.  To my surprise the Easter Bunny found me at Nicole's house and left me a basket with all of my favorite things.  I have the best friends!! :)

Tennessee

Tennessee  Tracy City/Lynchburg  Every year after hanging out with our extended family over the holidays, we promise each other that we will spend more time together. Well in 2022 we made that happen. Our cousins Dawn and Brian reached out to see if we would be interested in taking a short trip to Lynchburg, TN to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery . We jumped at the chance and Dawn started looking for places for us to stay. She found us the cutest "tiny home" at The Retreat at Water's Edge .  Day 1:  We picked up Dawn and Brian at their home in Covington, LA bright and early on a Thursday morning. When we got there, Dawn had mimosas ready (my kinda woman)! We loaded up Mike's truck and started making our way to Tracy City. After hours of laughing and a couple mimosa refills for us ladies, we made a stop for lunch in Tuscaloosa, AL at Avenue Pub . The food was delicious and the beer was even better.  We finally made it to the retreat where our tiny home was. It w...

Ireland 2010

Ennis We took an overnight flight to Shannon, Ireland and landed around 9am.  Having not been able to sleep on the flight, it probably wasn't the best idea to hop in a rental and drive several hours (on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the car) to the Cliffs of Moher.  Mary the driver, Julie the navigator and Holly asleep in the backseat! We should have realized we were in trouble when Mary started the rental and tried to drive away, but the car was making a streaking sound... Then a nice man walked up and told us we still had on the emergency break! :)    After taking in the views of the Cliffs we drove to the beautiful city of Ennis and checked into the Old Ground Hotel.  We later walked the streets, shopping, grabbing dinner and drinks, then stopped in a local pub where Holly insisted we each have an Irish Car bomb, since we were in Ireland after all.  Obviously, this was not Holly's first rodeo! Cuba 2017

As soon as I heard that flight from the US to Cuba were scheduled, I began thinking of an excuse to go!  Commercial flight began in Late 2016, so with our anniversary in early March, that gave me just enough time to start planning and booking.  Traveling to Cuba from the US for the sake of tourism was illegal however, the Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel.  We traveled with a People to People educational visa.  I mentioned to Mike the idea of going to Havana for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary and he was all for it.  I booked our flights from Southwest out of Fort Lauderdale and our Casa Particular and we patiently waiting for March.  Because of limited flight to and from Havana, we had to stay the night in Fort Lauderdale.  I booked the cheapest room I could find since we would only be there for 8 hours or so.  FYI, the cheapest room in Fort Lauder...
